TWIN PEAKS: DAYS 9-17

In this article we will continue where we left off in last month's article by summarizing and retitling the next segment of episodes in Mark Frost and David Lynch's groundbreaking Twin Peaks (1990-91) TV series. As I mentioned before, I am writing these articles in anticipation of the show's eventual Blu-Ray release to offer my respectful suggestions, free of charge, on how to best summarize Twin Peaks' episodes in any and all future releases of the show. Since Twin Peaks is an important milestone in the development of the current golden age of modern TV dramas, we should pay particular care and attention to the way it will be presented to future viewers from here on out.

TWIN PEAKS: DAYS 1-8

Over the next few months, I will share new episode titles and summaries for David Lynch and Mark Frost's TV series Twin Peaks (1990-91) and its prequel film Fire Walk with Me (1992). Since I never encountered an episode guide with sufficiently descriptive yet brief titles and synopses that really do the series justice, I created some myself. I invite the producers of the inevitable Blu-Ray release of Twin Peaks to include any or all of these titles and summaries in their box set free of charge, if they feel so inclined. At least these articles might provide the producers with a good launching platform when creating their own guide.

THE RING SYMBOL

David Lynch frequently carries over similar symbols from film to film, which enables us to better understand otherwise complex cinematic concepts more easily by triangulating every time that symbol is used. In other words, the surreal language of Lynch's films becomes clearer as you watch more of them. As the variations on these themes progress from film to film, the use of the symbol tends to become more abstract. With this video we will take a look at one of the most important motifs of David Lynch's films: The Ring Symbol.

LYNCH AND LOUIE

David Lynch guest starred on last night's episode of the FX comedy Louie (2010-Present). The episode was titled, "Late Show: Part 2." In the episode, the eponymous Louie (played by Louis C.K.) becomes Letterman's replacement as host of the Late Show. Louie's interactions with David Lynch appear to be comedic gold, as revealed in this series of clips from the episodes and stills, some of which we found courtesy of this recap.

WATCH "SIDE BY SIDE" TODAY!

David Lynch, George Lucas, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, and dozens of other A-list directors and cinematographers contributed their time to discuss with Keanu Reeves the transition into digital film making. And while any one of these directors would be fascinating to listen to on their own, Keanu Reeves's Side by Side (2012) has an embarrassment of riches for anyone interested in discussing the future of motion pictures with the most successful and revered group of filmmakers in the world.

DR. DAVID LYNCH'S MOVIE PRESCRIPTIONS

Mel Brooks and David Lynch Receiving Honorary Doctorates from the A.F.I. - June 2012
Last month David Lynch received an honorary doctorate from his old alma mater the American Film Institute (AFI) Conservatory. He was honored alongside a fellow recipient, Mel Brooks, who as the producer of The Elephant Man (1980) helped usher David Lynch from relative cinematic obscurity into the Hollywood big leagues. So now that we have an excuse to call the visionary director "Dr. David Lynch," let's take a look at what movies the good doctor prescribes.

TWIN PEAKS 1080P HD!

I've Got Good News! That TV show you like is about to come back in style...
At last, Twin Peaks is available in glorious 1080p HD! Until now, the only HD version of Twin Peaks available for download was the inferior 720p HD version at the iTunes Store. But iTunes is finally releasing them in the best current home video format: 1080p HD. Fortunately, those of us who already purchased Twin Peaks in 720p HD from iTunes can upgrade to the higher resolution version free of additional charge. Thank you Twin Peaks Archive for making this announcement and for sharing this link explaining the strangely convoluted process of upgrading to the 1080p HD version on iTunes. For a more cinematic experience, use your HD TV's "Zoom" function since the series was soft-matted for theatrical exhibition, as in the case with the premiere of the Pilot.

DUAL SPIRES (2010) PSYCH'S TWIN PEAKS HOMAGE

Two years ago fans of Mark Frost and David Lynch's seminal 90's TV classic Twin Peaks (1990-91) were thrilled to discover a special reunion was planned for much of the original cast as they guest starred on the comedic police procedural Psych (2006-Present) in Season 5 Episode 12 "Dual Spires," which paid homage to Twin Peaks. Planned in part to take advantage of Twin Peaks' 20th anniversary, the episode turned out to be one of Psych's highest rated episodes, reportedly prompting its producers to plan a follow-up episode that would allow even more of Twin Peaks' original cast to join the party.

ZOOEY DESCHANEL'S CHILDHOOD AND TWIN PEAKS

Zooey Deschanel was as close to being raised in Twin Peaks (1990-91) as a child can be. Mary Jo Deschanel, Zooey's mother, played the role of Donna's wheelchair-bound mother: Eileen Hayward. Caleb Deschanel, Zooey's father, is a successful cinematographer and directed three episodes of Twin Peaks. Now we just need some stories from director Stephen Gyllenhall's brood, Jake or Maggie Gyllenhall, to round out the collection.
The star of Elf (2003), Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005), and 500 Days of Summer (2009) discusses her parents' involvement with Twin Peaks and how she would sneak around to watch it all. Twin Peaks Co-Creator Mark Frost just tweeted our article with the introduction: "When Zooey met Bob..."
Here is a less time-specific version of the same interview excerpt on youtube, which is helpful for international readers who cannot watch the Hulu clip. Skip ahead to 01:35 for the relevant portion of the clip.

TWIN PEAKS: PATH TO THE WHITE LODGE

To Celebrate the Upcoming 20th Anniversary of Fire Walk with Me's Theatrical Release,
Again We Address its Status as One of David Lynch's Most Undervalued Masterpieces
"I was excited to discover the existence of a Twin Peaks prequel movie called Fire Walk with Me, but the movie seemed little like the TV series I had grown to know and love. The movie is much darker and disturbing than the series and many of my favorite characters are missing entirely. Isn't it best to ignore the prequel or just look at it as an entirely separate David Lynch project altogether?"
–A Recurring Question by Many Twin Peaks Fans
